A few years ago, I left my Wisconsin farm to visit a very stylish, beautiful, well-groomed friend in a hot Southern city. Although she is a modest person, she has ball gown after ball gown in garment bag after garment bag; shelves for her jewelry boxes; many pocketed hanging devices for her heels, her mules, her velvet sandals; and sealed containers for her sumptuous woolens, boxes no moths would dream of invading.
When I was a girl, my nickname was Mud-dog, for the same reason the dirty mess of a boy in Peanuts was called Pigpen. Through the years, I’ve learned how pointless it is to spend real money on clothes—for example, a Pollock splash of wine down the front and across the bosom of the thousand-dollar sweater, the very first night I wore it. The shameful truth is this: I hardly try anymore. I’ve nearly given up.
But in the thick humidity in the South with my glamorous friend it seemed reasonable to consider buying a shearling coat by the Canadian designer Zuki, the curly fleece pressed into shimmery gray-brown ripples, what the Badlands might look like from a satellite. The saleswoman assured me that Zuki had not killed the sheep in order to make the coat, which seemed unlikely, since the very skin side was there, a fine, soft suede. My hostess colluded too: “You have to buy this exquisite fur. Sixty percent off! You won’t be sorry.” A good friend always roots for commerce.
It seemed a bold, imaginative act, not only to dream that the world would again go cold, but that I would at some point have garments that I could wear with such a coat. Reader, I bought the Zuki. Yes, it was a great bargain, but still more than I could afford, so that the instant the salesgirl swiped my credit card I went prickly all over with regret. Also too late, I remembered that I live in a small town, that I would have no occasion to wear the coat, and that my perfectly good winterwear, a long brown Benedictine nun affair from Macy’s, served me quite well. It was a coat you could bundle up into a nice pillow shape or throw over yourself in the gate area while you waited out the delays. A little shaken, I went home, and there, during the show-and-tell portion of dinner, I took my purchase out of the box and did a runway walk for my husband and two children.
No support for old Mud-dog from that crew:
“You paid how much?”
“Are you out of your mind?”
“It’s ugly! It’s hideous! That sheep was too killed!”
Later, the neighbors had the same verdict, and my sister, the ultimate fashionista, tried to be nice but thought I’d done wrong. One thing led to the next: My son kindly offered to help me put the Zuki on eBay. He took the photos, he led me through the labyrinth of rules and regulations. I wanted to get a goodly portion of the money back, and along with the cash, the erasure of regret. But imagine! In the hottest summer on record, no one out in the climate-free cyberworld wanted to pay more than 100 bucks. And so I wrapped the thing in a garbage bag and threw it in the chest freezer, my version of the cedar-lined walk-in closet.
A few years passed; the coat remained moth-free in the basement until one bitterly cold morning when it rose before me in a waking dream. I got up, removed it from the bag, and sniffed for freezer burn. I was going to New York the next day, and if it didn’t smell of frosty ice cream, meat, and vegetables, I might finally wear it. I had no appropriate accessories, no boots, no terrific hat, no matching scarf, no elegant gloves. But my God, it was warm. I walked into the cutting wind down Lexington Avenue, and I felt like King Arthur’s sword slicing through the stone. It turns out it’s not only the sheep’s pin-size brain that allows it to stand stolidly around outside in the driving rain, but the radiating electric-blanket-like warmth of its own skin. I was a Mud-dog in sheep’s clothing: comfortable, exhilarated, and, as you will see, fashionable.
On that trip, I had occasion to go to a concert with my cousin and his friend, the one who has famously worked in fashion for several decades. I had never met this celebrity, but when I walked up to the pair waiting for me in the lobby, before we could be introduced, before a single word was exchanged, the friend reached for my coat. He clutched it and me to him. “Where did you get this?” he breathed. “I haven’t seen such a coat in years.” He pronounced: “This coat is fabulous.”
Note to everyone: Ha ha! My beautiful Southern friend had been right to steer me to the New York–certified fabulous coat, I had been right to buy it, everybody else was wrong, wrong, wrong.
It is still my best purchase to date, and so far, I haven’t wrecked it. Through the spring and summer and fall it awaits me in the freezer for next season, for those times when I again feel transformed in a glorious city on a bracing winter’s day.

Screen Style: Gossip Girl

When the CW's Gossip Girl premiered in 2007, the rich-kids-gone-wild drama used its hallway as a runway, making private-school plaid and appliqué headbands instantly covetable (even designer Anna Sui is hooked: she based her entire Target collection on the nighttime soap). But in the show's third season, now airing on Monday nights, Blair, Serena, and Vanessa are headed to college (while Jenny rules the school as a junior), which means bye-bye jumpers and hello, well, what? "There will definitely be more of an adult allure to the wardrobe," says costume designer Eric Daman, a former model who once worked as an assistant to Patricia Field on Sex and The City. Daman talks to ELLE.com about the ladies of GG and the inspiration behind their ever-evolving wardrobes. Plus, ELLE shops the look so you can crib their style (without leaving your keyboard).

The Best Ways to Wear Blue Eye Shadow

The dramatic eyes at Versace’s fall 2009 show were deep and mysterious, played up by makeup artist Pat McGrath with a “metallic midnight-blue.” Cobalt peepers also provided pops of color at Nicole Miller, Rebecca Taylor, and Tibi, suggesting that blue eyes are more than a passing fancy. But if you’re wary of the trend—unable to suppress memories of Mimi Bobeck’s scary turquoise shadow on The Drew Carey Show—McGrath, global creative design director for P&G Beauty, offers encouragement.

“When you go out at night, be brave and play with color,” says the makeup guru. “It’s all about having fun with your makeup.” And if the runway looks are too bold for your taste, don’t worry—there are equally stylish, more subtle alternatives. “You can do a classic smoky eye and add a little blue at the center of the lid. Or you can opt for just a flash of color by doing a wet blue dot on the inner corner of the eye,” says McGrath. “You can also blend blue eye shadow with a brown one and do a small tick at the outer edges with blue eye liner.”

The Cult of Momofuku

In case you haven’t ingested a lick of food television or binged on any food blogs in the past few years, Momofuku (“Lucky Peach” in Japanese) was the name of a tiny noodle bar in New York City’s East Village that opened in 2004, caught on like cupcakes, and ushered in the nouvelle ramen and pork bun craze now wiggling across the epicurean power centers of America.
The 20-seat, open-kitchen eatery transformed chef and owner David Chang (who started it with a $130,000 friend-and- family loan) into a celebrity chef. (If winning a James Beard award gave him the insider cred, a New Yorker profile assured his place on the hungry-tourist map.) Chang went on to open Ssäm Bar nearby, moved the noodle bar to its current, larger space a few storefronts over, and turned the original spot into a fine dining temple, Ko. Then he and pastry chef Christina Tosi opened their homage to Dairy Queen, Momofuku Bakery & Milk Bar.
Chang’s latest, perfectly timed move is his first cookbook (published by Clarkson Potter). Like his restaurants, the book’s generosity of spirit and lack of pretension will, I suspect, outwit the hyperpicky bitchery that hype tends to unleash. Useful flavor-amping recipes that range from sensible and easy (scallion oil) to advanced (“ghetto sous vide” steak) are broken up by insightful ingredient histories, how-tos, and vicariously thrilling autobiographical anecdotes—descriptions of Chang’s attempts to master the craft at the only bad ramen place in Tokyo, and the nail-biting (not in front of customers!) panic of opening a restaurant.
But one of the more fascinating aspects of the cult of Momofuku that’s only hinted at in the book is the creative relationship between Chang and Tosi.
For anyone with the patience to get a seat at one of Chang’s tables in those early days, the food, with its imaginative mix of comfort and experimentation, American and Asian, delivered. But, as evinced by the vintage McEnroe posters on Ssäm Bar’s walls, the loud rock ’n’ roll, and an emphasis on pork, the kitchen scene reeked of testosterone. There was little sweetness, literally: The only dessert on the menu was store-bought mochi. Then Tosi, a French Culinary Institute graduate like Chang, who was hired to help get a license for sous vide (vacuum-sealed food cooked slowly in warm water), started bringing in her baked goods for the staff. Chang recognized something in them, and in her, and insisted she put her desserts on the menu. Soon it became clear that she was the sweets visionary to equal his savory savant.
At her bakery, she takes the crass desserts most of us secretly prefer (chewy cookies, dense pies, soft-serve ice cream) and, without de-crassing them entirely, elevates them, like a surgeon of cravings, into their platonic versions.

Fashion Know It All: Sheer

Dear FKIA,
Transparent fashions are so seductive, but how to wear them without being charged with public indecency?
Frankly, I wish people (read: celebrities who make strippers in G-strings and pasties seem prim) could be thrown in jail for revealing their body parts. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the female form and the messages it can convey. Think of how the great masters—as in painters, not golfers—revered an abundance of flesh adroitly posed to symbolize wealth, health, and sensuality. But these days, as we all know, vulgarity too often passes for self-expression.
Still, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a tasteful way to flaunt what God gave you. Designers have been playing with ideas of exaggerating the female silhouette by placing emphasis on the breasts and hips for centuries. What’s refreshing this spring is that they’ve embraced a more measured and intellectual approach to celebrating the body electric, meaning it’s easier to look sexy without stumbling into raunchiness. Sheer or translucent panels over sporty bandeaux on long columns embody a modernist approach and are reminiscent of exercise gear or a sci-fi sheath. The best say, “Look but don’t touch,” with admirable Grecian reserve.
Narciso Rodriguez is a particular standout here. He’s been mining subtle sensuality since he launched his own line in 1997 and is devoted to exploring how smart women want to strut their understated stuff. Working in his signature palette of black and neutrals and pairing a long, tailored jacket with a whisper-thin shift, he strikes the perfect note of hard and soft. Reed Krakoff from his own line took a more uniform tack by finishing his sheer-top dress with a banded neck and shoulders and a drop-waist kilt. Richard Chai’s pants veil a pair of gym shorts with a barely there skin-tone, tulle T-shirt. Even Proenza Schouler’s layered lingerie dresses are a high-IQ take on a lady’s underpinnings. As Hitchcock clearly believed, the ice queen has it all over the red-hot mama.

Michael Angel

The New York based luxury brand, Michael Angel, is a newly founded women’s ready to wear brand. The brand debuted with a small collection for Spring/Summer 2008 collection which was followed up by a runway collection during New York Fashion Week last February for Autumn/Winter 2008. The brand’s founder is Michael Angel who in addition to designing apparel is an artist and successful women’s wear stylist.

For the past five years, Michael Angel has devoted himself to the creation of both digital and manual artwork, depicting his view of the world. For his first season, Michael brought to life a series of these images through translating his favorite pieces into unique, high fashion garments. The debut of the Michael Angel Collection for Spring 2008 passionately depicts his view of the modern woman - strong and self-aware. She is excited about her future, yet relishes in the present day.

For his debut collection, silk was used as the primary fabric as a means to represent the fluidity and movement of life, as well it’s ever-changing emotions and stages. Gathering and pleating techniques allowed Michael to achieve this by distorting the images he had grown so familiar with. Experimenting with the way the art translated differently to each different garment, a process that took him two years to perfect, only allowed his style to further evolve.

Since the debut of his collection, Michael Angel has generated an immediate buzz in the press, fashion, and art worlds alike. The blending of textures and colors create uniqueness in his pieces that reflect an undeniable energy. A notable example of press interest in the brand was a story in the September 08 issue of American Vogue where Michael Angel was featured as a new upcoming designer to watch, in the section “The View”.

Michael Angel, Creative Director:
Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Michael always had an immense passion and talent for fine art. By the age of 18, Michael had accepted the position of Senior Visual and Creative supervisor for SABA, Australia’s premiere and world-renowned department store. For eight years, he lent his visual and creative talents to the company through organizing runway shows and pitching successful marketing campaigns. His hard work and impact on the company did not go unnoticed- he has since been credited with completely revitalizing the brand and greatly elevating it’s success. Over the coming years, Michael went on to gain recognition as the Style Director for Melbourne Fashion Week, and the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. With over 10 years of international styling experience, he has also secured a reputation as a top stylist to many influential celebrities and campaigns. Cat Eye Glasses

Trend watchers are going for cat eye glasses this summer! The feline frames draws everybody’s attention and women going crazy to have one pair!

Cat eye glasses can be defined as thick-rimmed glasses with the arms of the glasses joining the lenses at the very top corners. They were mainly popular in the 1950s and 1960s among fashionable women. Some well-known women that are wearers of cat eye glasses were: Marilyn Monroe, Buddy Holly, Barbara Windsor and Dinah Manoff.
Unlike some eye wear trends of seasons’ past, the current cat-eye trend is actually quite wearable for a wide range of faces. That’s because there are really a wide range of opportunities: the more traditional ‘50s swoop and a wider, softer ‘80s iteration. Apart from these general categories, there are millions of different variations on these categories: from uber dramatic style to mega mainstream. Be sure you can find a shape that flatters your face and personal style.
These frames seem beautiful in tortoise, but the other hues, for example onyx, opal, opaz and a very groovy aqua can be super cool too.
Trendy women that follows the cat eye glasses rush are Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, Mary Kate Olsen and Nicky Hilton.
You can visit Amazon.com to find Cat Eye Glasses.

Women Fashion Accessories for Spring 2010

Women with high standards in fashion would never be satisfied with only fashionable clothes! What completes your clothes and make you fashionable are your accessories.
Don’t think only jewelry- your handbags, bow tie, scarves, watches, pins, belts, sunglasses, stockings, necktiex, leg warmers, leggings, suspenders and tights are also some accessories that makes you attractive and fashionable!

Using some fashion accessories with your clothes shows your  rich style! They add color, detail and energy to your outfit. Surely these accessories do more than enrich your clothes! For instance, a handbag is indispensable for a woman! You can hardly see a woman without a handbag! Handbags help us to carry our personal items –such as our wallet, keys, cosmetics, mobile phones and whatever you like. And what’s more- we feel comfortable with our bags, they’re the best friends that we never leave home without. Likewise, our watches show us the time, sometimes the date and the day, but at the same time they are really beautiful accessories for our wrists. Conversely, you can use some accessories to reveal your attitudes about religion or cultural affiliations with some symbols. Crucifixes, Jewish stars, Islamic headscarves, skullcaps and turbans are some examples that can easily be seen everywhere. Your social status can be understood by the label of accessories you choose.

When you enter a mall to buy some clothes sometimes you can see some fashion accessories near the pay desk. But also there are some individuals who create their personal brand and exhibit their own accessories.

The beginning of each year is important for fashion, because all the brands exhibits their new year creations and all of them tries to catch the trend of the new year. This rule is the same for the accessory trends! For this year, 2010, the Spring fashion is said to be full of fun. Because the season itself is warm and energetic, your accessories will project the season of blossoming flowers!

This spring will create a new shoes fashion. We will see ankle straps decorated with thick chains, studs and beads in a few month. For this year, designers converted platforms and flip flops which are printed with wild animal figures like snakes and leopards.

Handbags are not boring or serious anymore. Carry your ideas in your bag! This spring, handbags will be more amusing with printed messages or meaningful figures. These prints which contain humor, meaningful messages or cute connotations will reflect part of your personality. If you want to create a compatible style with your shoes, you shouldn’t neglect animal prints and adornments.

Imposing jewelry for the spring 2010 is sure to be used and highlighted. We will see necklaces of multiple layers and bows, dripping dangles and trinkets. Necklaces in bib-style will be fashionable in embroidered, beaded or sequined designs. We will say hello to chandelier earrings again! Denim Fashion Trends 2010

Spring-summer 2010 fashion shows were fulfilled under the slogan "militarism and madness " and customized denim fashion exhibited these inclinations, too. The most fashionable jeans of the spring-summer 2010 are torn, skinny, of dirty khaki, gray, blue or black colors.

All of them are combined with long sweaters or tops in army style. The season’s other trends are from the 90’s. They have really a sexy look.

Dyed jeans are still hot, this spring lots of them come in skinny, straight, torn, short and long norms. Custom jeans are other reminders of the 1990s' fashion. They look grunge as if they have been worn for several years. Boyfriend jeans are still popular as well. For instance, such jeans can be found in the latest collections of Ralph Lauren, Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace or Getwear. The latter fashion house demonstrated its variation of boyfriend jeans. They are wide on the thighs and tight on the ankles. Unique brand exhibited boyfriend style grunge jeans fitting women's figure, on the other hand they are very relaxed and extremely tattered, too.

Uncommonly adorned subculture jeans will also be trendy next season. Trussardi exhibits its excessive jeans model 1911 with pockets worn and torn. Just Cavalli denim collection is combined with denim fabric and flower embellishments. Jeans bedecked with rivets, zippers, chains and prints are also denim fashion trends of spring-summer 2010.

Classical jeans are eternal and they are absolutely worn in the new season as well. You can find worn straight-cut classical jeans in the spring/summer denim collections of D&G, William Rast, Getwear and Alexander McQueen.

Dandyish skinny black jean will be one of the hit denim trends of the coming season, in addition to cuts, jeggings and gray jeans. Banana Republic trademark presents denim trench coats and worn denim shirts is built on the combination of linen dresses with cotton cardigans. The using of denim patch pockets is another innovation of spring-summer denim fashion 2010.

Denim shorts are comfortable and practical and they have a great demand during hot summer days. Ultrashort denim shorts of black and red colors will take to the stage in spring-summer 2010 season. It presents torn shorts and shorts with cuts, too. Ballerinas and shoes with high heels are the best shoes to combine them with and the best accessories are absolutely massive pendants and bracelets, belt-bracelets and massive sunglasses and likewise aviator sunglasses.

Jeans with corsage are popular during the season autumn-winter 2009/2010 and they will go on for spring and summer as well. Jeans with corsage are ornamented with buttons and lacing and look excellent specifically in dark colors. This kind of jeans have an advantage as if your waist is slimmer your legs are longer. Their importance isn’t negligible. You had better wear a white blouse, short bolero or a jeans jacket with them. Even more, double denim stays prevailing during the coming season as well. And remember high heels!

Choosing Cool Sunglasses

There's something concerning a pair of prescription sunglasses that produces them one in every of the leading most important 'should-have' things of all time.
Not exclusively; are they enormously reasonable, giving protection from rays of the sun, they are an immensely multi-purpose fashion accessory, out there throughout a huge change of colors, styles and costs to satisfy each pocket. Sunglasses producing has become very profitable, on the other hand it is highly competitive business. Although some producers rise and decline in the general public fondness, there is one company that goes on to be eternally synonymous with the eyeglasses that protect our eyes from the rays of the sun. That is Ray-Ban.

Despite Us President, Benjamin Franklin, is commonly believed with developing eyeglasses, in fact the primary reading glasses were invented in Italy, as early as 1260. People kept being captivated by all things optical during the centuries that followed, afterwards, in the mid-eighteen, British scientist James Ayscough began to research tinted glass and the possibility that such technology could be used to raise vision impaired eyesight,. He was successful in some degree. After 1929, the concept that glasses might filter the sun’s rays.It was given any serious consideration. During that period, U.S. optical company, Foster Grant, began to develop the idea more, later that same year, the first sunglasses were sold from a Woolworth’s store on the Atlantic Town boardwalk.

The U.S. Army Air Corps knew new technology may be advantageous to their pilots and they asked another well-known Yankee company, Bausch & Lomb, to develop eyeglasses that may protect the eyes from the apparent risks of the sun.

Ray-Ban had been U.S. eyeglass company. Using the newly polarized lenses, and a wide frame that provided highest protection from the shine of an instrument panel, Ray-Ban began to supply a lens that banned the sun’s rays in 1936. 3 years later, this model of sunglasses therefore in style with pilots, became readily out there to the Yankee public. So Ray-Ban ‘aviators’ were born.

Similarly Americans came off from ages, so too did their eyewear. During war years, Ray-Ban went on its operating partnership with the Air Force, producing Gradient mirror lenses that achieved to be each highly practical and trendy at the same time. There was one thing concerning that Yank flyer in his powerful brown leather flight jacket, whose sunglasses hid his eyes. Ray-Ban had just created its sexy sunglasses.

It was ubiquitous in the 1950’s. Sunglasses became supplemental than just eye- protection. They had been worn by a-list celebrities in Vegas and Hollywood -stars whose each move was investigated and emulated everywhere in the country. Sunglasses became a fashion accent and Ray-Ban was fast to adapt itself into the growing trend for brand new styles and colorful frames, that they especially marketed to girls.

The corporate developed shatterproof lenses in the 1960’s and the acknowledgment of sunglasses continued to rise when fashion icon Jackie Kennedy was typically seen along with her trademark, outsized frames.Sunglasses were taking an important part on any actor’s costume on the silver screen, with movie stars like Peter Fonda and Audrey Hepburn, enjoying fashionable, sunglass wearing, characters who were in a position to hide their eyes from the audience and stay influential.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Ray-Ban continued to develop new designs. The ‘Wings’ model was indeed a forerunner to the very modern lens of today. The mirrored lenses once thus fashionable in the 1940’s began to reappear in the era of American TV cop shows, like Starsky & Hutch, and Chips. Ray-Ban was retro.

Funky and retro, trendy and fashionable, Ray-Ban remains at the foremost part of sunglass producing till today. Without any doubt, the company will continue to have stamina in the trade, because throughout the years it has developed itself day by day and  allowed people particularly about what they want for their eyes Ray-Ban gives reliable protection of a hi-tech pair of prescription sunglasses, and the extreme ‘cool’ of a damn sexy try of shades.

Firenze Jewels’ Website Redesign Pushes Online Diamond Shopping to New Horizon

"Virtual loupe" as seen on FirenzeJewels.comNew York, New York (PRWEB) November 30, 2009 — Firenze Jewels, Inc. proudly unveiled the first phase of a significant redesign to their website www.FirenzeJewels.com this week. Re-built from the ground up, the focus throughout the year-long project was to provide buyers with a fresh online shopping experience that was easy and intuitive. The makeover has already garnered positive feedback from new clientele as well as their core base of repeat customers. “The site was designed with the customer in mind, providing guidance and vivid imagery at every step so they make the right decision.” says Gabrielle Guzman, E-Commerce Director at Firenze Jewels.                                                                                                       “Virtual loupe” as seen on FirenzeJewels.com

Presenting and managing their ever-growing inventory of 3,500+ customizable pieces and 30,000+ certified loose diamonds was one of the jeweler’s biggest challenges. With advanced internet technology, customers can now sort through these in “real-time” effectively helping a shopper find exactly what they were looking for. This ensures a smooth transaction for both parties.
Among other distinct features on the website is a virtual loupe. Going beyond the standard zoom and enlarged photos seen on most e-commerce sites, the feature allows a shopper to inspect every detail on a diamond piece at various angles. In some cases, it lets one see details you normally couldn’t even if you viewed it with the naked eye in person.
With the economy in flux, the move comes after the longtime New York Diamond District jeweler looks to strengthen its presence in the diamond market online. Competing against other giants at various ends of the spectrum such as Tiffany & Co., Zales and .com retailer BlueNile, Firenze Jewels’ strategy for further success remains the same; extending their vast collection of signature designer pieces, world renowned NY Diamond District value, and personal family touch to a wider audience.
About Firenze Jewels:
Firenze features the world’s top designers, an extensive collection of platinum engagement rings and diamond wedding bands, and the most elegant and sophisticated jewelry. Family owned and operated jewelers since 1937, Firenze Jewels is located in the heart of the 47th Street Manhattan Diamond District.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Presentation

New York Fashion Week (September 12, 2009) – Stacey Bendet once again brings her work to life with the launch of alice + olivia’s spring 2010 collection. This season the innovative designer will transform a raw gallery space in New York City’s meatpacking district into a live rock concert scene featuring a performance by French girl band Plastiscines and styled by Stacey’s longtime friends Anda and Masha.
Following the success of the past themed presentations “alice in wonderland”, “breakfast in bed”, “hippy queen” and Mick Rock photo gallery at alice + olivia’s Bryant Park Store, Stacey once again spins a stylish tale through the music of the Plastiscines, enlisting the band to perform and promote the playful mood of the collection. Both the band and the runway models, posing as adoring fans, will showcase the designers’ spring looks.
Stacey’s inspiration for her spring 2010 collection was “the power of the female”. She wanted to represent girls “predicating sexuality, cleverness and charm” by combining influence from all the women who influence her every day.  Keeping her feminine side in mind, she set about to create a collection she describes as “playful with an edge”. The designer often credits her line as catering to every kind of woman; creating clothes that are meant to make a woman feel both sexy and sweet. After seeing the Plastiscines’ “Barcelona” video, Stacey decided that there was no better way to bring her spring collection to life than with a performance by the band.  The band exudes a “candy punk vibe” that is in tune with alice + olivia’s cleverly unique style.
Chic structured dresses in pale pinks, purples and neutrals are mixed with the brand’s traditional black and white colors. Small floral prints, embellished tops and structured jackets with cut out details define the flirty and inventive collection. alice + olivia will also showcase their basics line featuring t-shirts and button-downs in soft, butter-like fabrics, linens and metallics. This season alice + olivia also unveils their latest collaboration with the jewelry line Erickson Beamon and their continued partnership with Payless, featuring fashion-forward footwear for spring.
Spring 2010 will also mark the launch of alice + olivia’s premiere high-end collection. The new line was created to add more diversity for their specialty stores and allow customers to have a more unique alice + olivia shopping experience.  The collection consists of hand worked pieces that use luxurious materials and detailed craftsmanship. These edgy and inventive designs will be available as part of a limited edition collection.
As always, the imaginative and edgy collection will reflect Stacey’s lifestyle, as the ever busy designer continues to live bi-coastally and is mom to ten-month old daughter Eloise Breckenridge Eisner. Stacey views life and fashion as synonymous, and continues to find ways to creatively blend the two elements. With a chic spring collection brought to life by the Plasticines music, alice + olivia pushes the boundaries of art and fashion.

Style Channel: Small Screen Star Makeovers

There’s good news in Hollywoodland: The Ugg era is officially dead. Those caftan-and-caffeine-addicted looks of Nicole Richie, Mischa Barton, Hilary Duff, et al. are fading from memory, and the latest wave of TV talent appears to be opting out of the indelible same-old, same-old of star stylists. Instead, they’re embracing ELLE’s favorite mantra: personal style. Bravo! We know that ditching the cookie cutter and going free-form takes chutzpah; if your every coffee run were photographed, how brave would you be? Still, we can’t help but wonder what would happen if these women were to go varsity, dialing up their sartorial IQs with edgy wares from the fashion front. After all, once you’ve landed a hit series, a tiny wardrobe tweak is sometimes all it takes to get on the fast track.

Fashion Know It All: Prints

Dear FKIA,
How do I pull off spring’s prints without looking like I’ve stepped out of my grandmother’s scarf box?
Rest assured, this season’s full-length floral, animal, and fruit prints are the opposite of demure, channeling a ’70s European headiness that makes one dream of long, champagne-fueled interludes on velveteen banquettes at Regine’s. In other words, you can’t check this trend off the list by recycling a sweet knee-length standby from the back of your closet. Today’s versions serve up a heavy helping of gravitas in their baroque boldness and eccentric sophistication. They also give a new lease to that tired staple, the knee-length dress, thanks to the dramatic, floor-sweeping hemlines that are a huge fashion statement for both day and night.
The other great thing about the plethora of prints is how bracingly they offset the monochromatic utilitarian clothes that are also necessary for spring. Whether it’s the thigh-revealing fruit prints at Stella McCartney or the muted peonies at Chanel, these looks will make you pop like a fleshy Georgia O’Keeffe flower in a room of Barnett Newmans.
The same goes for Consuelo Castiglioni at Marni’s offbeat floral pantsuits, which might appeal to a younger girl, and Marc Jacobs’ art deco– and art nouveau–inspired prints for Louis Vuitton. They’re such sultry takes on that era’s fascination with nature and the Far East that the same woman who wears Céline by day will covet these for night.
The only thing missing here is a turban and a cigarette holder, but since no one wears fashion literally these days, you may opt for some oversize jewelry to complement the look. With restraint the byword in the collections for spring, you’re going to feel compelled to get a little wild somewhere. Let yourself bloom.

Performance Art

Sixteen years ago, when the documentary Unzipped came out and introduced audiences to a gregarious, frazzled, and irrepressible fashion designer named Isaac Mizrahi as he prepared his fall 1994 collection, most people still thought of “reality television” as what happened on the nightly news—there were no Housewives, no Kardashians, no Snooki. The concept of viewing the humiliating and mundane aspects of a person’s daily existence was by no means commonplace, nor was the idea of fashion as a spectator sport, but Mizrahi had a feeling the culture was headed in that direction: The film culminated with a fashion show in which the designer provided his supermodels—Kate, Linda, Cindy, Shalom, and Naomi among them—nothing but a sheer scrim to change behind between runway turns. Both the audience and the camera witnessed the entire fracas of fashion in action, not simply the polished and choreographed spectacle of the catwalk. “I thought, What’s so great about what goes on in front of the stage?” Mizrahi recalls, sipping iced coffee in his studio overlooking Fifth Avenue on a bright fall afternoon. “What really is the story is what’s going on behind the scenes.” It was a novel idea at the time. “Hollywood didn’t know what to make of it! I remember having a meeting with one of the agents at CAA, and he was like, ‘What?’ He actually said, ‘Are you talking about a wet-T-shirt video?’ ”
In the intervening years, of course, we’ve grown accustomed to watching the inner workings of the lives of others, and of those in the fashion industry in particular. Fashion has become entertainment, which is not bad for Mizrahi, who has long considered himself to be as much in show business as in design. An actor since his days at the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, the Brooklyn native has had a one-man show off Broadway and has directed and costumed an opera in St. Louis and hosted talk shows on both the Style and Oxygen networks. “To say that I’m a fashion person or that I only relate to the subject of fashion? It’s the exact opposite,” Mizrahi says. “I love fashion, so I keep it fresh by doing other things.”
In his Bravo reality series The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection (season two aired in November), Mizrahi plays the encouraging nurturer to the designer contestants who compete in groups, as “houses,” rather than individually, à la Project Runway. He’s the Tim Gunn to his leading lady Iman’s more arch and urbane Heidi Klum. Mizrahi says he was never a fan of Runway, his show’s predecessor on the network; “I guess all those years I didn’t watch it because it was something about my industry. I prefer to watch other things, like The Biggest Loser, and I watch all of the Housewives. New York for sure has the best style. On some of those other ones, like the OC or Atlanta—oh my God! That much plastic surgery? That much bleached hair? All right, who are you but a hooker? And I love a hooker.”
The prevailing aesthetic when Mizrahi graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1983 was just the opposite: austere and cerebral. “Like Geoffrey Beene,” Mizrahi says. “His clothes were very smart. You really had to look at them a couple of times to understand what was going on, this insane depth.” Mizrahi, whose office is decorated with artist Jenny Ping’s drawings of lizards dressed in ballet costumes and a large Julia Sherman painting of a field of circles in sorbet colors, was drawn to a more playful spirit: “What about girls? What about poodles? What about ice cream?” Mizrahi gave us frothy tulle ball-gown skirts with mock-turtleneck bodysuits, tartan pantsuits—uptown classics with a wink. He meant them, too; he didn’t intend to make satire out of the pink and the polka-dotted. “There’s nothing less sexy than air quotes around something,” he says. “It’s like taking the smell away and expecting to be aroused.”
Mizrahi struck a nerve with his first show in 1987; by 1992, Chanel was backing his business, only to pull out after six years for inconsistent sales—taking away Mizrahi’s right to design under his own name for five years in the bargain. When that time was up, he became the first fashion designer to partner with Target in 2003, a collaboration that was so successful it has been repeated by everyone from Proenza Schouler to Rodarte in years since, though few insiders saw that coming at the time. “People were like, ‘Oh my God, you’re signing a deal with Target?! What’s that going to do to us?’ ” Mizrahi recalls. “It’s gonna keep you alive, bitch!”
The designer is prone to this kind of finger-snapping hyperbole, but his realization that high fashion needed to become more democratic to remain relevant has been borne out in secondary lines at H&Ms and Walmarts across the country. Still, Mizrahi insists that his own mass-market ventures—the Target deal; his position as creative director of Liz Claiborne New York, a job he’s had since 2008; his own year-old line for QVC’s IsaacMizrahiLive!—are not about financial survival, however: They are about fun. “The impulse is ‘Don’t bore me’—that’s why anybody does anything,” he says.
Today, you can buy almost anything—at any price—with some variant of the Isaac Mizrahi label and his signature joie de vivre. Since 2009, he has sold his luxe Isaac Mizrahi New York collection—for spring, there are garden-party sheaths cloaked in nude tulle with crisp white collars and jackets embellished with ghostly trompe l’oeil buttons, bows, and pockets meant to look like the work of an old Xerox machine—at his eponymous boutique off Madison Avenue. On QVC, he peddles everything from $60 handbags to melamine mixing bowls. He pulls a trio of these in cheery coral, gold, and purple off a shelf in his office and gasps at them: “Look how pretty! I love all the stuff we do for QVC”—toggle coats, Christmas ornaments, silverware. “It’s all different stuff,” Mizrahi says, grinning. “We did amazingly well with cheesecake.”

Top 10: Small Cars

“Think Small,” the old Volkswagen print ads challenged. At a time when Americans were doing quite the opposite in car buying -- or anything, really -- VW (and brilliant marketing) rocked the status quo and rewrote the rules. Big cars weren’t eradicated, but shoppers began realizing a car’s virtues weren’t commensurate with sheer mass.

Call us cyclical, destined to repeat history, whatever. Ever since the big SUV orgy went soft, small cars are finding favor again. Fortunately for us, they combine efficiency, ergonomics, safety, and value like never before. And let’s not forget performance, because more than a few of our top 10 small cars smoke seriously pedigreed sports cars of the not-too-distant past in acceleration, braking and handling.

Given the caliber of models, it wasn’t easy limiting ourselves to just 10. Read on to see what small cars score big with us.
